In the universe of Wolf Kingdom, an army of wolves has overrun the world. Now the Wolf-King, Grince I, rules from his Iron Castle in the city of Grinceburg. Grince is a tyrant and his soldiers are bullies, who treat all humans as slaves.
But there’s a secret behind Grince’s power, a reason why these wolves can talk and think and walk on their hind legs like no other animal.

The only humans outside the wolves’ control are the Free Folk. They’re an outlaw band under the leadership of Hooley Dan. Their hideout lies in the middle of Eld Forest and looks like a sheer-side lump of rock from the outside. Inside, it’s hollow and honeycombed with caves. The Free Folk launch small raids against the wolves, but the dream of one day defeating their brutal rule seems a long way away.
The story begins in ESCAPE! when Tam and Nina return home to find that their parents have been taken prisoner and their house taken over by wolf-soldiers. The wolves pursue them into the woods. Nina and Tam escape, but they may freeze to death when it starts snowing.
Their only hope is to join up with the Free Folk. On their way through Eld Forest, they come upon a deserted monastery.
Only one monk still lives there, Brother Ambril. But can he be trusted? And what sort of magic makes him such a successful hunter of rabbits?
When Tam and Nina continue on in search of the Free Folk, they now have the company of Berkiss de Berkin Berissimo Bort. In spite of the name, he’s a leather belt which Tam wears round his waist. But no ordinary belt!
They come to the Free Folk’s hideout, the great lump of rock called the Bluff, but they can’t find a way to get in. And now the wolves have caught up with them—a whole battalion of soldiers. They’re spotted and trapped …
In UNDER SIEGE,, the Free Folk learn that the wolves are bringing up a huge secret weapon to use against their hideout. Tam and Nina, who are now members of the outlaw band, go out as spies to the nearest town, where the secret weapon is hidden under canvas. What is Wolf-Roarer?
They fall in with a sneak-thief, Chiz, and get thrown into jail along with him.
No chance of escape—unless the bag that Chiz has stolen can do something magical …
Chiz would like to join the outlaws, but perhaps there’ll be no outlaws left to join. For now the wolves have started firing their secret weapon at the Bluff and the caves inside are collapsing under the bombardment. It’s certain destruction for the Free Folk unless Tam, Nina and Chiz can do something to save them. A desperate plan just might work
In RACE TO THE RUINS, a company of elite wolf-soldiers are on a mission to recover a magical object, a special kind of dagger. It’s too late for the Free Folk to catch them up, except by boat on the river … and the river route goes through the impossibly dangerous Black Gorge, then through an area of electric eels, then to the sinister clay fields outside the ruins of the Palace of Idris.
The Free Folk won’t risk it, but Tam, Nina and Chiz will. Their boat carries them through the Black Gorge, then past the eels. After barely surviving the ghostly perils of the clay fields, they finally arrive at the ruins.
But they still can’t find the dagger until suddenly the wolf-soldiers turn up. They know exactly where the dagger is. How to get it off them? Maybe Agger Dagger has a mind of his own …
The last book is THE HEAVY CROWN. Finally, Hooley Dan has agreed to search the dungeons of the Iron Castle for Tam and Nina’s parents. They smuggle themselves into the great tower, but get split up. Hooley Dan and his second-in-command go down to the dungeons …
Tam, Nina and Chiz climb to the upper floors, where they see Grince I performing a very special ceremony. At last they understand the secret of his power!
The climax involves a near-beheading, a surprise reappearance, a descent by rope, a rescue and a fight against the odds.
In the end, Grince’s rule is finished forever. and even the wolves aren’t sorry that it’s over …
